This "Granulari" series is an homage to and also my own "spin" on one of the Italian designer and architect Carlo Scarpa's groundbreaking designs from the early 1940s. If you were to feel these in person, you would feel a bumpy, "granuloso" (granular) surface texture that comes from the opaque lines of very "stiff" glass drastically contrasting in viscosity with the surrounding "softer" glass. Scarpa's timeless designs in glass, and the colors and effects that the technicians at the Venini factory where they were produced were able to achieve, have been some of my greatest inspirations. And so it is with great respect and admiration that I pursued making these works while adding my own design sensibilities to his original concept from 80 years ago.
